- Ah-HAH!
-
- So my memory isn't quite as bad as I suddenly thought it must me ;-)
-
- We all forgot that their are half a dozen incarnations of the FT101. (Though
- I will with head in hand admit that I WAS thinking of an FT101A (does this
- date me just a bit...I remember them when they were NEW ;-)) For that
- matter, when I bought my FT901, it was only a few years old, and I new the
- TWO previous owners...thus thought I was getting a good deal on the radio
- cuz I new what it had already been through.
-
- Anyway, back to the original dicussion...my first SSB was a sweep tube
- rig as I mentioned, the TR3, and I got 15 years of service out of that
- dude before I finally sold it a few years ago. (Replaced the sweep tubes
- twice I think over that period of time...and yes it was a *&%($ to neutralize.)
- The tubes got replaced due to incessant use and age, not because they
- weren't hardy enough. I had a grand time with that radio!

- No, QTH is "My location is".... QTH? is "What is your location?"
-
- So "What is your QTH?" is really "What is your (QTH)?" (parens for
- clarity).
- and, similarly, "What is your what is your location?" (I assume you
- meant that) would be rendered "What is your QTH??"
-
- I"m not sure how to say ?? in phone, as distinct from ?, but there
- you have it.
-
- I find QTH to be confusing because it is also used to mean "home",
- although people sometimes ask for my "home QTH", as opposed to my
- "present QTH"
-
- QSL? is equally confusing, because I take it to mean "You know what I
- mean?", but sometimes is really means "Send me a QSL card" (Unusual
- for 2 meter repeater use, but I encountered one such on New Years
- Eve...)
-
- QSO however, is a useful term in voice... it doesn't mean just
- "conversation", but "radio conversation". One does not have a QSO on
- the telephone, or in person.
-
- The other use for these abbreviations in phone is to help people
- remember them - without such constant use, some may not remember the
- right common Q signal on CW. Judicious use of Q-signals in phone
- doesn't bother me... but indiscriminate use sure does!

- Jack, I think you are right, there is a 6M (FM) band plan in the Repeater

- Wayne Overbeck's article in June CQ presents a realistic assessment of PRB-1
- and the courts. Having been extremely involved in the David Evans, NQ0I,
- case cited in his article, I can safely say, that in the 10th Circuit,
- PRB-1 isn't worth the paper it was written on.
-
- As to the difference between CQ and QST coverage, you have got to understand

- it is against their editorial policy. When NQ0I won in Federal District
- Court, they gave it lots of publicity. When that decision was overturned
- in Federal Appeals Court, nary a word was said in QST !
-
- If you read the tiny print of the ARRL Board of Directors, Executive
- Committee minutes in the June QST, you will see an item about Chris
- Imlay, N3AKD, ARRL General Counsel, briefing the committee on the
- possibility of the FCC modifying PRB-1 to give it more power. What
- did Mr. Imlay tell the committee ? Inquiring minds want to know.

- Subject : Re: Amp-Hours for a Battery
-
- There is a relationship between open-circuit voltage, temperature and
- state of charge. Panasonic publishes a technical pamphlet for their line
- of sealed gel-cell batteries which contains a graph yielding the
- percentage of charge remaining for any given open circuit voltage.
- The cell temp is important, Panasonics reference temp is 77 F. Open
- circuit voltage means that the battery has been neither charged or
- discharged for several hours.
-
- But *roughly* an o-c voltage of 12.9 -13.0 means 100% and 11.9 - 12.0
- means about 10%. The relationship is not perfectly linear but is close
- enough that if I read 12.45 V I assume a 50% charge remaining, etc.
- Caution: I have also found that this only works with a battery that is in
- good condition. Abuse by severe overcharge or 100% depletion will change
- the o-c voltages and render this method unreliable.
-
- I frequently buy gel-cells at hamfests and carry a small DMM with me. I
- never buy a battery that is outside of the 12.0-13.0 range and its got to
- be a real bargain if it reads below 12.5!
-
- Also, another thing I look for is any bulge or depression on the sidewalls
